EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
