She Has Amassed Hundreds of Pokémon Hole Cards, and Nothing Can Halt Her.
The Pokémon Company unveiled fans to the trading card game DP set in the year 2007, showcasing a Bonsly trading card. In this card, the fourth generation rock-type is shown by designer Harada-san in a somewhat awkward situation. Here, the predecessor to Sudowoodo is depicted toppled and crying. Don't be fooled, though. Like its ability Fake Tears suggests, the little creature aims to manipulate the other player's mood to decreasing their offensive power. Unforgettable artwork, right? Harp player Emily Hopkins certainly thinks so. And she's got a collection book with 305 Bonsly illustrations to show for it.
The Entire Assortment with Key Pieces
That's not everything she has either. She has acquired twenty reverse foil copies featuring Bonsly, which depicts the tyke with metallic accents everywhere but the central artwork. The crown jewel, however, is the PSA 6-rated reverse holographic Bonsly edition. Sure, it isn't a mint-condition Charizard illustration. However, can you claim a goofy, nearly pristine card of Bonsly preserved in its eternal glory? I thought as much.
How It All Began
Emily dedicated most of the current year gathering every 2007 Bonsly card that she could locate. She initially learned regarding this discontinued card at the start of the year, while talking about the notoriously odd cards among collectors with an employee in a nearby store. The weeping Omanyte was a contender, as was the forever alone Cubone in an amusement park. However, the one that Bonsly crying, or Bonsly #17, which captured her interest.
The Concept of Bonsly
The design of Bonsly is based from miniature trees, which are typically planted in containers with holes at the bottom. These are meant to support healthy development, to the extent that fans advise one another to create openings in their containers if holes are missing. Additionally, bonsai may sit on low dishes hole-free, referred to as suiban, where the water stays can help growers style their trees to resemble nature vistas. Bonsly represents the first type, which explains the hole.
The Infamous Hole Card
Although this makes sense, however, Pokémon's creators seems almost excessively attentive regarding the hole in Bonsly. Also, products including stuffed Bonsly make sure to include a hollow cavern on the underside of this plant Pokémon. It doesn't matter if the illustration of this particular Bonsly is crying or at ease: It's going to show the hole. The hole is a fundamental aspect of Bonsly's design. This specific Bonsly card gained meme status among fans thanks to the famous hole, in addition to its status. Up until last year, Bonsly #71 remained the sole iteration of Bonsly available included in the series in which most Pokémon are commonly shown in multiple editions. For sixteen years, if you wanted a Bonsly card, you had to settle with this specific design.
A Growing Obsession
"When I saw Bonsly in the list of oddball cards, I felt I located my new favorite," Emily states in a message, noting that it was unexpected to have missed it until then. She admits freely to inform you her passion for the Bonsly card serves no practical purpose, but she didn't care. The initial interest evolved into an all-consuming hobby, as Hopkins bought all copies of this card that she could get her hands on. She soon developed a routine of stopping by her favorite shop regularly, and became known to the employees as the Bonsly collector. The store began reserving all incoming Bonsly #71 cards it received aside just for Hopkins. Typically, these cards are priced at one to three dollars, she mentions, estimating that she's spent somewhere around $400 just on the binder alone.
Market Trends and Value
Currently, mint-condition this Bonsly card can cost up to $14.99. While that's on the higher end, standard Bonsly #71 cards are often priced at starting at $4. That price increase corresponds to the time Emily began building her set, but it's possible that various influences. Although the card is notorious among collectors, Emily's social media updates on it have attracted countless views. With information about this card keeps growing to new fans, it is likely that their market price may continue to shoot up. If nothing else, collectors mention how TCG prices are climbing currently in general.
Unstoppable Determination
Nothing can halt her, however.
"What's incredible is a few followers and viewers from her channel have sent their Bonsly cards to me for her album, and they will remain these cards protected always," Hopkins says. Instead of being put off, fans are amazed and encouraged by this project.
