The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The motion against the student leader achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to celebrate the death of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a messaging group with other members seeming to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results revealed on this week.

Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in following the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Voting operations were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His response categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he continued as president-elect.

His statement added that he was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have said that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".

The communication warned that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".

The Oxford Union had earlier criticized the student's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the union in May.
