Two Separate Cuba-Destined Relief Sailboats Reported Lost after Departing Mexican Waters.
A large-scale search and rescue effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean waters for two unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.
Military Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and military search aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine total personnel, per a navy statement.
The vessels had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.
Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation
The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the country struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.
"The captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with proper safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy said.
The nine-person crew are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"We are collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Previous Relief Delivery
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.
That ship, dubbed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar panels, drugs, baby formula, bikes and food.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Foreign policy measures have increased over the past months, with comments from various officials emphasizing the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.
In response to previous statements, a prominent official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its reach to discover the sailboats and ensure the well-being of the crews.
To date, there has been no public statement on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
